The Mohs' Hardness Pick Set is unique in that, unlike other mineral hardness testing tools that use minerals or crystal points, our picks are made of metals and alloys of hardness values equal to 2 through 9 on Mohs’ hardness scale.  Because the picks are made of metal, they are easily ground to sharp points which will not break off and which can be easily sharpened.

Using a MOHS Hardness Test Kit Can Increase Your Production, Reduce Diamond Cost and Frustration

Many contractors today are running into slabs that are in the range of 7 to 9 on the MOHS Scale. Concrete slabs that are this hard present a challenge for many contractors regardless of the equipment they may be using. The Golden Rule is - "The Harder the Concrete ~ The Softer The Bond." So how can you tell how hard the concrete is? Test it with a MOHS Hardness Test Kit.

If you don't know the hardness of the concrete, how do you know what bond to use. If you use a soft bond diamond on a soft floor, they can disappear in 500 sq. ft. If you use a hard bond diamond on a hard floor the machine just skates on the floor and the tooling glazes - result: No Production. It will be the Best Investment you will make should you decide to get one.

How do you use the hardness picks? Simply scratch the surface of your concrete with the picks of various indicated hardness. As an example, if a No. 5 pick scratches the concrete, but a No. 4 pick does not, then your concrete’s hardness is 4.5. Then compare this against the included table of minerals listing hardness values to aid in determining which bond to use.

What is included in the Deluxe Hardness Pick Set?

  • Four double-ended picks with eight points comprising 2,3,4,5,6,7,8, and 9 on Mohs’ hardness scale
  • A Glass Hardness Plate (hardness of about 5.5) which, when scratched, quickly distinguishes hard from soft minerals.
